Description (ca. 1921): William Gleason opened Gleason Works in Rochester in 1865. The firm manufactures metal working tools and machines, but specializes in engine lathes and planers. The original location was on Brown's Race, but the plant has been at 1000 University Avenue since 1911, which allowed for expansion. His children Kate, James and Andrew Gleason all worked for him in the shop.
