Description (ca. 1921):
This building was originally constructed in 1868 by Daniel Powers. Soon after its construction, 3 more floors, as well as an observation tower, were added, as Mr. Powers couldn’t tolerate his building not being the tallest in Rochester at the time. This building contained several boilers to generate power, and in the 1900s, was used to power the electric railroad that ran through Rochester. It is also the first building of its kind; some of the features of the building were never used or seen before, namely an elevator. It was also billed by NY State as fireproof; given its steel, cast iron, and stone construction.
