Category: Tool

Uses: A hidden camera, used by both the public and for spy technology

Description (ca. 1921):
Cameras were often designed to have the appearance of regular objects a person might carry:cigarette boxes, canes, bags, watches, and other common items. While generally thought of and initially used for spy practices, disguised cameras were also used by the public. This sort of photographer wished to take photographs of day to day life without the disruption of an obvious camera. They believed they could get more genuine and spontaneous expressions from their subjects by disguising their activity. While less common than obvious cameras, various types of disguised cameras were still popular in use.
